Language professionals are among those who teamed up with the World of Little League® Museum and Official Store for the audio tour guide project that is now available in eight languages.

The interactive, multilingual audio tour guide is among the most recent attractions at the Museum, which reopened in 2013 following a $4.3 million renovation project.

The tour walks through the six museum galleries, known as innings, and provides an in-depth description of each exhibit, offering additional highlights not mentioned in a typical walkthrough of the museum. In each gallery, tour goers hear stories retold by various members of the Little League community, including Baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield, artist Charles Fazzino,Karen Stotz Myers (daughter of Little League founder Carl Stotz), and Linda Ruth Tosetti (granddaughter of Babe Ruth).

The variety of languages offered allows the museum to be more engaging for everyone.

“I can’t wait for our friends outside the country to experience this new feature,” said Lance Van Auken, Vice President and Executive Director of the World of Little League. “Now everyone can have a richer understanding of Little League’s history and the reasons it has become the largest and most respected youth sports program in the world.”

The Museum worked with professors from Bloomsburg and Bucknell universities, local radio personality Lou Kolb as well as other translators.

The audio tour guides are available in English, Spanish, Korean, Arabic, Chinese, French and Dutch. There also is one in English that is kid-friendly. Several other languages are planned for 2015.

Coordinating the language project on behalf of Bloomsburg University was Dr. Jing Luo, professor of languages and cultures. Assisting him were several professors: Drs. Nathalie Cornelius, Amarilis Hildalgo de Jesus, Yahya Laayouni and Mykola Polyuha.

Others involved in the project included Daniel van den Berg, Suh Sang Ganahl, and Dr. Mizuki Takahashi.

Written translations are available in each of the languages. Additional languages are to be added in 2015.

Part of the cost of the translating was funded through a Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission grant received by the museum in June.

The grant, totaling $4,336, also was used to offset costs of inputting data into the Museum’s Past Perfect Program, digitizing thousands of Little League’s paper rosters and updating exhibits for 2014.

“We are grateful to the Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission for the funding that helped to make the audio addition possible,” said Mr. Van Auken. “With thousands of visitors coming here from all over the world every year, it is a wonderful asset to the museum and the community.”

Among the exhibit updates were the addition of a case about hosts at the Little League World Series, a case about Mike Mussina, a former baseball pitcher who was inducted into the Little League Hall of Excellence, and highlights of this year’s games. Other updates included the addition of newly acquired artifacts into existing cases, particularly a Little League jersey from Vietnam, a country chartering its first league this year.

The World of Little League is open daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. with the exception of Dec. 24, 25, 30, New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, and Thanksgiving Day. General admission is $5. It is $2 for children (ages 5 through 12) and $3 for senior citizens (62 years and older). Children four and younger are admitted free of charge. The audio tour guide rental fee is $3 (free for AAA members).
